Culture Night Late Extends Sligo’s Vibrant Celebration Well into the Night

Sligo brings an array of cultural experiences in a pilot program supported by the Night-Time Economy project.

Sligo’s cultural celebration will extend into the late hours this Culture Night, thanks to the support of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, and their Night-Time Economy pilot initiative.

There are nine pilot locations for the Night- Time Economy Project including Buncrana, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Longford and Sligo. As one of the project’s pilot towns, Sligo will feature an exciting lineup of events under the Culture Night Late banner.

This extended programme on Friday, September 20th, invites attendees to experience the vibrant and creative spirit of Sligo well into the night, as part of the wider Culture Night festivities. This year’s theme for Sligo Culture Night is Hidden Treasures so everyone can explore the town and discover some of its culture and creativity.

Opera After Dark

It’s late into Culture Night 2024. You take a seat in the hallowed grounds of Sligo’s grand Cathedral. For this evening, you’ve discovered a hidden treasure, you’ve entered the warmth of an Artists sanctuary. You take a moment to pause. From the silence a bow becomes restless and beauty fills the air for it was once said by St Augustine: “To sing, is to pray twice”.

Come then, witness the prayer.

Starring Sharon Carty and the Sligo Baroque Ensemble featuring Sligo Baroque Music Festival Director Nicola Cleary

The offering takes places in Sligo Cathedral from 10pm-11pm.

A Hawk’s Well Theatre and Sligo Baroque Music Festival Co-Production.

Edel Doran, Night Time Economy Advisor for Sligo Town, Sligo BID said

“This extended evening gives a chance to highlight the amazing cultural offerings in Sligo town.

This night is a true partnership involving Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, the Arts Council, the Hawk’s Well Theatre as organisers of Culture Night Sligo,  Sligo County Council and its Culture Team including Declan Bree, Edel McSharry, Nessa Cosgrove and Fergal Nealon, and multiple amazing artists and arts organisations.

Cultural adventures are available throughout the year too so I would urge people to enjoy Culture Night and Culture Night Late but to continue to explore the offerings of Sligo beyond the Culture Night date!”
